“This selection of works was born out of fascination with Gothic Romanticism—a literary tradition that disguises our universal human fears into a cathartic theatre of shadows.
My passion for literature began in adolescence, when I consumed the works of Poe, Hoffmann, Walpole, Stoker, and Maturin. It led me to study it academically, in the context of the genre’s Slavic adaptations.
The echoes of the so-called “dark school” resound through popular culture, from the suspenseful vintage vignettes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents to the tales of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, which testify to the genre’s enduring legacy. It was not the ornate gloom of baroque aesthetics that drew me to it, but the emotion it aimed to unravel within us – our dread of death, the anguish of losing a loved one, perceived injustices and other existential terrors we quietly bear.
Indeed, the Gothic dresser is forever overflowing with familiar accessories; therefore, you must seek beyond the climbing ivy, past the murky shadows drawing shapes on the yellowed walls. Once you see past the scenography, you might find that there is kindness in pushing the shadows into the light. The fantastical is only there to cajole you into the dark, to invite you to think about the unthinkable, to peck at whatever stirs your dreams at night…”
